Slaughterhouse-Five is based partly on Vonnegut’s own experiences and observations as a soldier in World War II. Captured by the German army, he was in a meat locker underground when the city of Dresden was bombed by Allied planes, killing 25,000 or more people in a matter of hours.

Sometimes that is a pretty poor showing and sometimes it's fantastic, so it goes. Sometimes awful things happen to innocent people, so it goes. Sometimes the most beautiful things happen to awful people, so it goes.
